Service Invocation:

Holy Father of creation, our Father who art in heaven hallowed is your name.  Thy Kingdom come Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give is this day, our daily bread.  Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who have trespassed against us.  Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

We thank you LORD for the preparation by Jesus Christ; preparation to be received and to receive your blessed promises; the New Covenant.  We praise you for you are our number one priority and your perfect will is that which we seek.  Perfect your will within each of us providing us strength by your Spirit.  Thank you for people made in your image, redeemed and rescued by your mercy upon the cross of Jesus.  Empower us with your spirit to overcome evil and provide the same deliverance to those under the yoke of the adversary.  Freedom to love & worship you, the One True God.  We love you and give you all our praise, strength, mind and spirit.  We choose to worship you in spirit and in truth.

We trust you.  We obey you.  Speak today.  Grant us ears to listen & obey taking you at your Word.

Opening Word & Reading for Worship:

Ruth, the great-grandmother of King David.  Made her prominence in the Biblical library by unique and unusual loyalty to her mother-in-law.  Her story took place near the time of the Judges.  Her story is a picture of God’s faithfulness, love and care.  You might ask, “So what?” Know Your Bible by Barbour Publishing would reply, “We can trust God to provide what we need, when we need it—and to work out our lives in ways that are better than we ever imagined” (Cite 1).

Tithes & Offering

Paul Writes to Corinth requesting “The Collection for Christians in Jerusalem” (NLT Pericope)
"But I want it to be a willing gift, not one given grudgingly. [6] Remember this--a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. [7] You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don't give reluctantly or in response to pressure. "For God loves a person who gives cheerfully."(Pr 22:8) [8] And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. [9] As the Scriptures say, "They share freely and give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will be remembered forever." (Ps 112:9) [10] For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity (Gk. righteousness) in you. [11] Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God. [12] So two good things will result from this ministry of giving--the needs of the believers in Jerusalem [(God’s Holy people in our region & beyond)] will be met, and they will joyfully express their thanks to God. [13] As a result of your ministry, they will give glory to God. For your generosity to them and to all believers will prove that you are obedient to the Good News of Christ. [14] And they will pray for you with deep affection because of the overflowing grace God has given to you. [15] Thank God for this gift (Gk his gift) too wonderful for words!" - 2Co 9:1-15 NLT Emphasis mine

Sermon Thesis:

God Plans with Purpose

Intro:

The Genesis of it all for us began in Texas & Utah.  Kelli raised Episcopalian & Southern Baptist later marries a young Navy man reared in the Mormon community.  Ten years into our marriage I hit great depths of despair while operating as a Deep-Sea Diver.  That’s when I met the real Jesus of the Bible.  And we received spiritual discipleship from the First Assembly of God—Red Hill Oahu, Hawaii

Dove Creek First Assembly of God founded during the 21st Century Pentecostal movement in 1936 some 30 years after the Azusa Street revival in Los Angeles by A.J. Justice & his wife, Madeline.  Sent to plant & pastor by the General Council of the Assemblies of God, Springfield MO.  The original facility for assembling was made of logs hauled by the local men of the church from the Blue Mountain in Monticello, UT.  Forty years later Pastor Edward Phelps, his sons & local men built the roof we now observe overhead.  There was a period of church closure for some time until Rocky Mountain Ministries network sent men to re-open (Cite 1).  Praise God for the shelter we have for assembling within!

We’ve been on campus for 18 months now.  I’ve learned much thus far and remain excited to learn about all the rich history here at Dove Creek.  It’s been a pleasure to share life with you.  I’m very enthusiastic about sharing more as time permits.  Before finding the opportunity to serve here we had been longing for 10 or more years.  Our Adult Daughter Bailey is with her husband Daniel in San Diego, California.  Rearing our four grandchildren; Daniel Jr., Rosabella, Skyler & Jynelle.  Ages: 14, 12, 9 & 6.  We love and miss them dearly and thanks to technology we hear and see them frequently.

God plans for you with purpose.  I still believe God’s plan for us is to make Jesus known here in the region of Dove Creek because all have been born into the world, but not all in the world have been born again unto the Spirit (Jn 3:1-3:21).  Are you experiencing the New Birth described to Nicodemus?

MAIN TEXT/TOPIC

New Birth, New Beginnings.

8 Scripture Addresses:  Exo 1:8-22, Mat 11:25-30, Exo 6:6—8, Exo 3:1-5, Pro 27:17, 1Jo 3:1-3, Jos 1:8-9, Jn16:25-33.

Nutshell Outline:  Some common attributes present with new beginnings are the following:

1.   Fear, pain & discomfort.

2.   Changes & resistance to change.

3.   Plans, Purpose & Hope.

God is ordaining the steps.  We passionately believe that only God could have orchestrated such an opportunity such this.  He is faithful, The Alpha & Omega.

Local Dove Creek Press Story published in 76'.

1. Fear, pain & discomfort.

All are Born naked into this world with nothing but kicking & screaming!  With people who care.

A)  Moses was born into a hazardous & hostile situation when all children of his generation were targets in an effort to prevent the continued growth of the enslaved Israelites.  Fearful that they would overtake Pharaoh. All this before being invited to sacred ground at the flaming bush.

22 Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: "Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.""

[Exo 1:8-22 NIV] "8 Then a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt.  9 "Look," he said to his people, "the Israelites have become far too numerous for us.  10 Come, we must deal shrewdly with them or they will become even more numerous and, if war breaks out, will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the country." 11 So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built Pithom [(pa-tum)] and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites 13 and worked them ruthlessly. 14 They made their lives bitter with harsh labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their harsh labor the Egyptians worked them ruthlessly.  15 The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah [(shif’ra)] and Puah [(pu’a)], 16 "When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live." 17 The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live. 18 Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, "Why have you done this?  Why have you let the boys live?" 19 The midwives answered Pharaoh, "Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive." 20 So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous.  21 And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.  22 Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: "Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.""

B)  New beginnings can be scary for ALL of us.  Exciting none the less but with excitement comes various challenges and reasonable growing pains.  With this in mind.  Let us continue to agree on this.  If He can bear the wages sin paying debts of mankind upon the cross (Ro 6:23), He is reliable to free us of the burdens we will face together this next year and beyond.  Face them we must do, but not without dependence upon the Rock of our salvationJehovah Jireh! (Gen 22:14) The Lord’s Provision Shall be seen!  Let’s love the Lord and fear God remembering that there is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out ALL fear (1Jn 4:18).

[Mat 11:25-30 NIV] "25 At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.  26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.  27 "All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.""

"yoke" occurs 60 times in 53 verses in the NIV/BLB.  Yoke Illustration:

"Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me"
~Jesus the Christ Matthew 11:29

C) Unlike Moses we have this perspective of Jesus the Christ in mind.  We have the redeemer.  The Israelites and Moses were waiting for rescue.  We have a unique perspective on history here in the 21st century.

[Exo 6:6—8] NIV 6 “Therefore, say to the Israelites: ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.  I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment.  7 I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God.  Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.  8 And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession.  I am the LORD.’ ”

2.  Changes & Resistance to Change.

“…Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near” (Mt 3:2 NIV) John the Baptist.  “Repent & be Baptized” Peter in (Acts 2:38) (Baptizing, Baptize).  Despair and the need for rescue.  We have a choice to make each day of our temporary existence on earth.  Just like in the day of Jesus’ launch into ministry and like Peter on the day of Pentecost.  We can resist the ongoing changes in our environment, or we can accept them, take a stand and deliberately engage.  We can adjust ourselves proactively to the active & anticipated growing pains.  Lord willing the pain & suffering will be less if we get involved and allow regenerative strain to occur.

A) Think about the ministry call of God to Moses.  Moses was strategically placed into the adversarial court to provide God’s chosen people the way of escape (Ps 23 food for thought).  He didn’t ask for this assignment.  He resisted the changes initially.  Imagine being Moses.  Different than the royalty with whom raised him and taught the practices of the Egyptian’s.  Moses being more like those who were oppressed by Pharoah.  When he recognized the misery of his fellow people he acted in violence and escaped to Midian.  He later accepted his assignment, but not before the various growing pains and delay.

[Exo 3:1-5 NIV] "1 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.  2 There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush.  Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.  3 So Moses thought, "I will go over and see this strange sight--why the bush does not burn up." 4 When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, "Moses!  Moses!" And Moses said, "Here I am." 5 "Do not come any closer," God said.  "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground." "

Moses placed in the water & saved by faith in God's Spirit!

Our shoes are removed today in honor to those who went before us.  In honor of the One True God who has been leading this congregation’s collective conscience for 89 years.

Somewhere near 2018 before my credential certifications from the Assemblies of God came to fruition.  I didn’t have a flaming bush experience, but I did get impression from the Holy Spirit that the Lord may send us near the region of the Henry Mountains in Utah.  Reminded of this vision when the Search Committee announced the open Pastorate to the public.  Personally, among all the options we faced for our future, when I considered the opportunity here at First Assembly a surpassing peace came over me.  Unlike the other options.  The peace I experienced then has sustained as we have settled into the parsonage here.

God plans with purpose.  Again, in my submission & surrender to God, I believe God’s plan for us is to make Jesus known here in the region of Dove Creek because all have been born into the world, but not all in the world have been born again unto the Spirit (Jn 3:1-3:21).  Again, I ask, are you experiencing the New Birth described by Jesus in John 3:1?

God plans with purpose.  I believe God’s plan for us is to make Jesus known here in the region of Dove Creek because all have been born into the world, but not all in the world have been born again unto the Spirit.

 B)  In facing new beginnings let us not simply go with the flow thereby going through the motions, but please join hands, hearts in the Spirit & truth to GROW THROUGH the motions.  Let’s reject passivity and proactively help one another to sharpen our identity in Christ Jesus.  We’re not here to change the church’s identity, we’re here to sharpen, strengthen & contrast your identity in the Image of God.  As God intended you to be.  On the other hand, let’s all avoid being so rigid in our form that we fail to build our spiritual muscles together as one body of Christ.  Resistance is good but doesn’t always produce the results we’re aiming to gain.  God desires a heart that is moldable NOT hardened toward His perfect will.

On the other hand, let’s all avoid being so rigid in our form that we fail to build our spiritual muscles together as on body of Christ.  Resistance is good but doesn’t always produce the results we’re aiming to gain.

[Pro 27:17 NIV] "17 As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."

Let’s R.E.A.C.H. beyond what we know to what he has planned for us by Rejecting passivity, Expecting God’s greater reward, Accepting responsibility, with Courage & Humility. This acrostic is simple REACH!

R-Reject Passivity
E-Expect God's Greater Reward
A-Accept Responsibility
C-Courage
H-Humility

Tombstone rolled away!  The Resurrected Jesus.

3.  Plans, purpose & hope.

God plans with purpose!  Other than our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ another thing we have in common; is that we are all born into the world between His-story & hope.  God has a future for which we can hope!  God has a future for which you can hope!

"All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure." ~1Jo 3:3 NIV

[1Jo 3:1-3 NIV] "1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!  And that is what we are!  The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.  2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.  3 All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure."

A)     When Joshua received his assignment from Moses, he too experienced these common environmental & social challenges of Fear, pain & discomfort.  Changes & resistance to change.  Through Moses, what did God tell Joshua?  1:8—9.

"8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.""

~Jos 1:8-9 NIV

Joshua was a witness to the various actions by the Creator to deliver and rescue His chosen people from oppression and death.  Tasked with reminding the Israelites and their coming generations of the remarkable wonders & works of God the Creator.  Charged with ensuring they would not forget the God of their ancestors.

Personally, I haven’t had the privilege of a Moses tasking me with the next objective vividly.  Yet, as you know, I sense the Lord is telling me to prepare a similar Next Generation project for our congregation.  Our Centennial celebration is in 2036.  This is mentioned in Boots to Roots.   I’m excited to form a committee but wait for other details to arrange before organizing the project details leading up to our centennial.  God has done remarkable things in our church, and we stand on the shoulders of those who went before us.

B) When Jesus was born into the world reared by Mary & Joseph, he like Moses was born into a hazardous & hostile situation.  His life and the many children of his generation were also targeted by a King.  King Herod feared the loss of his throne because of the prophesied future arrival of new Jewish King, the Jewish Messiah.

Here at Dove Creek Assembly of God.  We’re not being targets as Moses & Jesus.  We’re not in a hostile environment, but the children coming into the world are still targets in a variety of hostility.  They, like us, arrive in the world naked kicking and screaming.  We must protect and provide them with the comfort & direction they need.

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” - Pro 22:6 KJV

The work of God is a serious responsibility, and ministry begins in the home.

Let us remember that Jesus prepared his followers for the future.  Jesus gave them many instructions but let us turn to John 16:33 for a detail regarding persecution, strength, and hope.

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.""

John 16:33 NIV

[Jn 16:25-33 NIV ] "25 "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.  I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.  28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." 29 Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.  30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions.  This makes us believe that you came from God." 31 "Do you now believe?" Jesus replied.  32 "A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home.  You will leave me all alone.  Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. 33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.  In this world you will have trouble.  But take heart! I have overcome the world." "

Again, God plans with purpose.  God desires us to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and propagate the kingdom of heaven here.  Because all have been born into the world, but not all in the world have been born again unto the Spirit (Jn 3:1-3:21).  Are you experiencing the Spiritually renewed heart described in the Bible? Are you Stewarding Your Heart?

4. Weekly Study & Next Week

This evening we’ll spend some time diving deeper into Creation Science God’s Word & God’s Works.  We'll also dig into this message and explore the scriptures herein including the topic of Stewarding Your Heart and experiencing the Spiritually Renewed Life.  Next week, LORD willing, we’ll continue in this sermon series New Beginnings | God’s Plan, The Great Flood & Humanities Rebirth.

Sermon Summary & Conclusion:

Today we’ve explored three common attributes present with new beginnings: Fear, pain & discomfort.  Changes & resistance to change.  Plans, Purpose & Hope.  Each of you has been born someplace between His-Story & Hope.  This new beginning we entered together as a family of God was not hostile.  This hasn’t been a hostile coup!  The pulpit transition planned by God & God's people with purpose & prayer.

My family & I have been accepting our L.O.T. for the last 12 years serving in God’s Kingdom Ministry.  Along our journey we’ve simply Listened, Obeyed & Trusted (LOT) in His way not leaning on our own understanding (Pr 3:5).  God is ordaining the steps.  As a couple we continue to stand here on Holy ground ready to serve & come alongside you to serve the greater region of Dove Creek & Delores County.  With our hand to the plow (Lk 9:62), we affirm that only God could have orchestrated such an opportunity as the sense of immigration to foreign soil.  God has been faithful in our past, the LORD is faithful today and our God will be faithful tomorrow.  He is the faithful Alpha & Omega!

We carry the message of eternal life!

Sermon Exhortation:

Are you experiencing the abundant spiritually renewed life in Christ Jesus?

Sermon Altar Call to Action:

To further explore discipleship and this idea of “new birth” (BLB) from Jesus the Christ our Lord and Savior.  Join us this evening for some small group discussion relevant to God’s Word & God’s Works.  What does the Bible mean by “born again”?  (BLB Search KJV) How do we lead our hearts in spiritually renewed life?

Sermon Prayer & song:

Service Benediction:

Faithful One True God.  Ruth’s tenacious spirit & loyalty (Rth 1:16) comes from a place of great hardship, despair and trust in your faithfulness.  Like her we remember where we come from but more importantly, we concentrate on where you are leading and will have us go.  We choose to pay whatever price it costs us to be your disciple.  Help us to count the cost of discipleship with wisdom & discernment matured by your grace.  Remove all fear from our hearts and perfect your love within us.  Oh, Merciful Yahweh.
