Implausible | The Lord Jesus Christ Fully God | His Eternal Existence
By Rev. Nicholas Sybrowsky
Preached Sunday, March 23, 2025
Sermon Invocation:
Our precious heavenly Father, full of impeccable promises, we enter this time of worship through preaching, a renewal of our minds in your living word. We offer ourselves as living sacrifices to you, holy and pleasing. We pray that this sacrifice be a sweet-smelling aroma to you, Almighty Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
Opening Word & Reading for Worship:
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” ~Deuteronomy 6:4,5
Tithes & Offering
Father, we give back a portion of what you have blessed us with. Open our eyes to see how blessed we are and that you are the one that has supplied us with what we have. As we determine what we can give, may we remember that we cannot out give you!
Bless both the gift and the giver; may the treasure, time, talent & trade be used in a way that will benefit your work here on earth. May we be able to use these tithes & offerings to help draw others closer to you in some way. Be with us throughout the remainder of the sermon, and may you be pleased with our offerings to you both now and in our daily worship of you in truth & Spirit. We love you, Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
Sermon | His Eternal Existence
Prelude:
(Cite 2)
Thesis: The on time, timeless external & internal existence of Christ Jesus the Lord our God.
Intro:
As we approach spring, Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday, I've been led to preach on the topic of Jesus' Divinity, The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ. As an Assemblies of God fellowship this is the third doctrine in the 16 statements of fundamental truths. We believe that The Lord Jesus is Fully God. During the next 6 to 7 weeks, we will examine: 1- His Eternal Existence. 2- His Virgin Birth. 3- His Sinless Life. 4- His Miracles. 5- His Death (Good Friday at 6pm). 6- His Resurrection. And 7- His Exaltation (Cite1).
Walt Disney used a formula to become a renowned animator. He used his creative imagination to move ideas in animation from impossible to possible. The sweet spot he found was the space between "impossibility” & "Possibility". Hence forth, the sermon series title is Mission Implausible. Comprehensive explanation of the concept of God on time, in time, outside of time and fully man and fully God is an assignment that has a large volume of detail. Logically illogical. It’s not much different than the video Plausible Implausible and paradoxical expressions.
Using thoughts and imagination we can figuratively eat an elephant to discover how to move from impossibility to possibility by describing the plausibility's in-between. That appears to be what Walt did with animation and somewhere else he describes well that the concept came from ancient peoples.
In the Art of Animation by Walt Disney he defines the principle in animation The Plausible Impossible. Meaning:
"Taking something that is against the laws of nature; something impossible and making it appear rational & acceptable, in short plausible." ~Walt Disney—The Art of Animation (Cite 3)
When you invest time in the detailed profile of Jesus Christ it becomes nearly impossible to comprehend all that there is to observe in the various detail of Him. That's why we often refer to Him as 'Almighty'. At first glance it seems incomprehensible. There are many details within Jesus' ministry on earth. Perhaps to describe His ministry, a sufficient nutshell is rescue, redeem, reward & rebuild.
…Rescue, redeem, reward & rebuild.
That may be hard for you to imagine but I know that we can agree on this, Jesus did many things on earth. He accomplished much to say the least. He had but one primary mission. Rescue & Redeem Mankind. His crucifixion & resurrection would not have impacted Creation as profoundly as it has without all the other details though. Yet we must start somewhere.
Pre-existence, physical manifestation & post-existence. Timeless, but on time within an era of physical time and space. The great “I AM”. The Lord Jesus Christ is Fully God. His pre & post existence are reality. As you read scripture it's helpful to remind yourself that the Old Testament (OT) conceals Jesus the Messiah, and the New Testament Reveals Jesus Christ the Messiah. Where is Jesus in the OT?
According to Wikipedia,
" A deity or god is a supernatural being considered to be sacred and worthy of worship due to having authority over the universe, nature or human life."
The Oxford Dictionary of English defines deity as,
"a god or goddess, or anything revered as divine."
MAIN TEXT/TOPIC
The Divinity of Jesus Christ and His Eternal existence.
"And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." ~ Gen 1:26 (KJV)
"I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty." ~ Revelation 1:8 (KJV)
[1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] He was in the beginning with God. [3] All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. [4] In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. [5] And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. [Jhn 1:1-5 NKJV]
[37] "And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. [38] "But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. [39] "You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. [40] "But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. [Jhn 5:37-40 NKJV]
[20] which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated [Him] at His right hand in the heavenly [places], [Eph 1:20 NKJV]
[1] Now [this is] the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, [Heb 8:1 NKJV]
1. Jesus was with God at the time of Creation
WHICH IS, AND WHICH WAS AND WHICH IS TO COME... (KJV)
WHO IS AND WHO WAS AND WHO IS TO COME... (NKJV, NIV, ESV)
"I AM THE ONE WHO IS, WHO ALWAYS WAS, AND WHO IS STILL TO COME... (NLT)
HE DA ONE DAT STAY NOW, DAT STAY BEFO TIME, AND DAT GOIN TO STAY AFTA... (HWP)
"Da Boss, he say, "everyting, from first to last, A to Z, He da one dat stay now, dat stay befo time, and dat goin to stay afta, da One dat get all da power."
~Wat Jesus Show John Rev. 1:8 (HWP)
This remark, to John from the Lord himself in verse :8 helps emphasize His preexistence. The Alpha & the Omega (Gk.) Synonymous for: The Beginning & the End. The Starter & Finisher (of our faith Heb. 12:2). IAM (God is). The Alpha & the Zulu; From A to Z (US Navy Phonetic Alphabet). in Hebrew: The Aleph & the Taw (Hebrew alphabet)
God spoke Creation into existence. "And God said..."(Gen. 1:3, :6, :9, :11, :14, :20 & :24) Seven times. And then, here in Gen. 1:26 the 8th time, "God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness..." "US" make man in "OUR" image, after "OUR" likeness. Who is the author referring to? We know it's God speaking in this scene of creation. Who is God referring to? Us & our? Here is one example of Jesus concealed in the Old Testament. There are many theories and ideas out there, but many scholars agree that this is a reference to Trinity. Ironically in this translation the author uses a plural pronoun 3 times in Gen. 1:26.
Pre-existence is a qualifying factor of Divinity. Jesus' preexistence is one of the many factors quantifying Him as our Deity. He was present from the beginning and throughout ALL the miracles within the OT.
The Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, has always existed. He is without beginning or end (Rev. 1:8).
2. The first Advent to earth was prophesied and has occurred
Another qualifying factor of Divinity is that Jesus made it clear that the OT predicted His coming. Don Stewart contributor to Blue Letter Bible.org (BLB). Answers a FAQ in the BLB. That question is, Did Jesus Fulfill the Prophecies about the Messiah? Mr. Steward points us to the Gospel according to John 5:39 where Jesus say’s so himself.
Don Stewart provides us with extensive quantifying details meeting qualifying attributes of Divinity & Deity.
“A) The Family Line Was Predicted,
B) The Place of His Coming [was] Predicted,
C) The Time of His Coming [was] Predicted…
When Jesus came to the earth, the temple had not yet been destroyed. Teaching at the temple was an important part of Jesus’ ministry. The temple was destroyed in the year A.D. 70, 40 years after His death & resurrection. Therefore, Jesus fulfilled certain prophecies about the coming Messiah.
1. He was born in the right family line—David’s.
2. He was born in the right place-Bethlehem.
3. He was born at the right time in history—before the city of Jerusalem and the temple were destroyed.
After looking at only three lines of prophecies that Jesus fulfilled at His first coming, we can make the following observations.
Jesus told the religious leaders to search the Scriptures and discover where they spoke about Him. The coming Messiah was to be born in one particular family. This would be through Shem, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, and David. The New Testament is clear that Jesus was a descendant of David. The Old Testament prophet Micah predicted the Messiah would be born in the small town of Bethlehem. Matthew tells us that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Daniel the prophet said the Messiah would come before the city of Jerusalem and the temple were destroyed at that He would also be killed. Jesus came upon the scene of history before the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple. He was crucified about forty years before they were destroyed. The prophecies that Jesus fulfilled were fulfilled literally. He was a literal descendant of David, literally born in Bethlehem, and literally died before the city and temple were destroyed.
These three lines of prophecy were fulfilled by Jesus' birth. There is no way, humanly speaking, that He could have deliberately fulfilled them. The coming of the Messiah was predicted in the Old Testament. Jesus fulfilled these prophecies and, in doing so, has the right to claim to be the promised Messiah (Cite 2).”
3. The second Advent has been prophesied and shall come to pass.
The first arrival of Jesus the Christ our Lord and Savior has changed me profoundly. I am a witness to His saving grace. This same grace I have witnessed in others and heard their testimony of miraculous impact to them. Have you allowed Him to change you?
Since this statistically improbable event occurred without human manipulation and more than 3 lines of prophecy became a paradoxical reality on earth. What is causing you to doubt the return of the Lord Jesus Christ?
[20] "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. [Rev 3:20 NKJV]
Maybe it is time to confess such doubts to the Lord. The same God in the Revelation to John in 3:21 say’s,
[21] "To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. [22] "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." ' " [Rev 3:21-22 NKJV]
Will you testify?
March 30th (5th Sunday Singspiration locally) is a great day to share some testimony of what the Lord has done for you recently. Come ready to the open mic next Sunday and share a 2–3-minute testimony.
4. In Two weeks: In addition to Communion, we will continue in the Mission Implausible | His Virgin Birth & Sinless Life.
Sermon Summary & Conclusion:
Jesus was with God at the time of creation. The Bible teaches that creation was a cooperative work of the Trinity. In addition to naming God [the Father] as Creator, the Old Testament shows that “the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters” (Genesis 1:2; Psalm 33:6–7). The New Testament further reveals that Jesus [the Son], who is the one Mediator between God and fallen humanity (1 Timothy 2:5), was the active Agent in creation, “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth” (Colossians 1:16). This truth is also echoed in John’s Gospel, “Through him [Jesus, the Word] all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” (John 1:3) (Cite 3).
The first Advent to earth was foretold & we have qualifying & quantifiable evidence that this visitation by the Messiah has already occurred. There is a second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ planned and recorded in the Bible. Not even the son of God knows the date & time, but the Commander of heaven's army will “go” when directed by the Father of creation.
Sermon Exhortation:
Let me spur you on in love!
If something is hard to understand, does it make reality any less factual? An event may be difficult to understand, but it doesn't mean it didn't occur. Like the moment you lose a loved one. It's hard to understand and accept, but the death still occurred.
It is difficult for me to make sense of death and to understand why my earthly father Steven, died as he did. Yet, he still died.
Are you waiting to die or are you waiting to live?
According to the Revelation shared with John on the island of Patmos, there is a spiritual death where the adversary and his followers will be cast into the lake of fire. This is a second death (Rev 2:11, Rev 20:6, 14 & Rev 21:8).
Sermon Altar Call to Action:
Invite & Inspire Action. ARE YOU READY FOR ETERNITY? Which path are you on? Is it eternal life & reward? Is it eternal death & punishment?
Service Benediction:
